Safety Corner
Protecting Our Children
NESLL is committed to player safety and strives to provide a safe environment for children to enjoy baseball and softball. We also affirm the primary responsibility of parents and guardians in decisions affecting their children and will, wherever possible, support parental decisions for their child’s safety. Protecting our children through development and application of a safety program is the NESLL’s top priority. Each year, NESLL prepares a Safety Plan in accordance with National Little League
Safety Program requirements.
New for 2010 - Concussion Law Compliance!
If your child has been playing other sports this fall, you probably have seen new policies related to concussion prevention. The new “Zackery Lystedt Law” (Washington State HB 1824) regarding Head Injury Policies in Youth Sports was enacted in 2009 to encourage greater awareness and safety for youth athletes. It requires certain notifications be given to athletes, parents and coaches. It also creates policies for how youth athletes should be treated when suspected of a head injury.
All managers and coaches must obtain first aid training each year to be eligible to serve as manager or coach in NESLL. First aid training is offered at our annual Mandatory Managers’ Meeting. Managers and coaches are encouraged to seek additional training in first aid techniques.
Medical Release Form
The parents or guardians of each player must complete this form and provide to their manager or coach prior to the first practice. The form includes important contact information and health information that could be important if the player is injured. Managers must keep these forms available at each practice and game in case an injury occurs. NESLL encourages managers to keep them in a weatherproof container (baggie) with team equipment.
Accident or Injury Reporting
An incident that causes any player, manager, coach, umpire or volunteer to receive medical treatment and/or first-aid must be reported to the NESLL Safety Officer within 48 hours of the incident. This includes even passive treatments such as the evaluation and diagnosis of the extent of the injury or period of rest.
Little League Child Protection Program
NESLL is required to conduct background checks on managers, coaches, board of directors members and any other persons, volunteers or hired workers, who provide regular service to the league and/or have repetitive access to, or contact with, players or teams. Individuals are also required to complete and submit a Little League Volunteer Application to their local league. Northeast Seattle Little League’s Safety Officer will conduct an official background check of all volunteers. Volunteers are not authorized to have any contact with NESLL participants until such background check is satisfactorily completed.
